Tom Kozlowski: Hear Music See Video

Self Portrait (With Video)

(Tom Kozlowski)
January 1, 2008
Charcoal in hand I sketch the face
Fill in the lines defining the space
Separate the shadow from light
Calling forth this invisible life

Capture the inner space in a frame
Silent image please give these secrets a name
Beneath the layers of paint lies a soul
I fear it might reveal something empty and cold

And the brush strokes watch you slowly age
The image darkens the colors fade
The eyes will follow you from the wall
Something tells you they see it all
The canvas has dried
The paint never lies
Let it speak

Today I told myself there's nothing to add
I know I should stop but I can't pry the brush from my hand
Layer upon layer I fear it's too late
You can't alter a soul with just a few traces of paint

And the brush strokes watch you slowly age
The image darkens the colors fade
The eyes will follow you from the wall
Something tells you they see it all
The canvas has dried
The paint never lies
Let it speak
